Market brief 24 Oct: Two days of ETF outflows, BTC under its ETF cost basis...

tprotank

The 24 October 2026 market brief covers BTC, ETH, SOL and HYPE: where the crowd is leaning, where the structure sits, and the levels that would change my mind.

The short version

  • The selling continued. Spot BTC ETFs lost another $138M on Friday, about $773M over two days, and BTC marks 80,751, under its 50-day.
  • BTC longs haven't moved. Funding sat at the full rate in all 24 hours and open interest barely changed. The long book that bought the failed breakout is still there.
  • ETH and SOL funding briefly went negative. Leverage is leaving the altcoins faster than BTC.
  • HYPE is testing its 76 floor for a fifth time, now with flat funding.
  • Key risk: a thin weekend sitting on 79,700, then the Fed decision on Wednesday 28 October.

Macro backdrop

Liquidity is now working against crypto. Net dollar liquidity has swung to a drain of about $63B over 30 days, after the small build we had flagged before. Equity volatility is still elevated at about 19.5. The rest is steady. The S&P trend holds, credit spreads are still very tight, only one of three recession warnings is on, and BTC's on-chain valuation sits high in its historical range. Timing reads stay mildly negative. Overall: neutral, with a weaker liquidity tailwind.

The Fed holds next week by consensus. 94 of 100 economists in a Reuters poll expect no move on 28 October, and FedWatch priced about 17% for a hike. December is the live meeting, priced at about 83% for a hike (Mitrade). So the risk Wednesday is guidance that confirms December, not a surprise hike. Then Q3 GDP and PCE arrive on Thursday (Thrive in Markets). We could not verify Friday's flash PMI figures, so we don't use them here.

BTC - Below ETF cost basis, longs still paying full funding, 79,700 is the line

BTC is down 1.3% since the last brief. Friday's low was 80,500, and the daily close of 81,180 failed to get back over the 50-day near 81,820. The 20-day has rolled down to about 82,590. Spot ETFs lost $138M on Friday, led by IBIT at $110M, after Thursday's $635M (Bloomingbit, The Block). Price is now under the estimated average cost of ETF holdings, about 81,500, so that money is underwater on average (CryptoSlate).

Hyperliquid open interest edged down only 0.7% to $3.55B. Funding paid 10.95% annualized in every hour. Two days of selling haven't forced the longs out, and that stuck long book is the fuel if 79,700 gives way.

Neutral, with risk elevated. The range low is 79,732 (15 October), about 1.3% below the mark. A daily close under 79,700 invalidates the range and opens 76,000 to 77,000. A daily close back above 82,600, the 20-day, would repair the damage.

ETH - Leverage flushing out, funding went negative, 2,314 the line

ETH is down 1.1% to 2,376.8 since the last brief, after a low of 2,349. It still sits under the 20-day near 2,475 and the 50-day near 2,548. The change is in positioning. Funding averaged only about 5% over 24 hours and was negative in four of them, and it marks slightly negative now. Open interest fell 1.9% to $2.57B. Unlike BTC, longs here are leaving.

Neutral, leaning soft. The cleaner positioning cuts the risk of a long squeeze, but the trend is still down. A daily close under 2,314, the 30-day low, invalidates and opens the 2,200s. A daily close above 2,475 neutralises the lean.

SOL - Slipping inside the box, 100 is the floor

SOL is down 2.1% to 102.29 since the last brief and was the weakest major. It touched 101.64. The 20-day near 107.95 and the 50-day near 109.66 sit well overhead. Open interest fell 4% to $548M, and funding briefly reached about -15% annualized before going back to positive. That is longs leaving, not shorts piling in. Nothing has changed on the network side. This is BTC-led selling.

Neutral. The 30-day low at 100.34 is the support. A daily close under 100 invalidates and opens the low 90s. A daily close above 110 turns the trend.

HYPE - Fifth test of 76, shorts briefly back, lower highs intact

HYPE marks 76.95, down 1.4% since the last brief. Friday's low of 76.11 and this morning's 76.10 held just above the 76.02 floor. The 20-day near 82.4 and the 50-day near 85.3 cap the lower highs from the 98 peak. Funding swung to about -31% annualized for an hour and is now flat. Open interest is steady at $1.60B. Shorts are pressing this floor, and buybacks funded by about $170B of monthly volume are what keep defending it (Crypto Briefing).

The short lean holds, but this is a binary spot. Repeated tests usually weaken a floor, and a daily close under 76 opens the low 70s. A daily close above 86.0 invalidates.

What to watch in the next 72 hours

  • Sat 24 - Sun 25 Oct: thin weekend liquidity, BTC 79,700 and HYPE 76 in focus.
  • Mon 26 Oct, after the US close: Friday-to-Monday ETF flows, to see whether a third outflow day follows.
  • Tue 27 Oct: FOMC meeting opens. The decision lands Wednesday 28 Oct at 18:00 UTC.
  • Thu 29 Oct, 12:30 UTC: Q3 GDP and PCE inflation, just past the window but close enough to be priced into positioning.
