Market brief 23 Oct: ETF money turned to a $635M outflow, BTC lost its...

tprotank

Here is how BTC, ETH, SOL and HYPE look on 23 October 2026. I read funding and open interest before the chart, and I name the price that would invalidate each call.

The short version

  • The breakout failed outright. BTC closed Thursday at 81,410, under both its 20-day and 50-day, and marks 81,849.
  • The ETF bid that held the range flipped. Spot BTC ETFs lost $635M on Thursday after three inflow days, and ETH ETFs lost $110M.
  • BTC open interest rose about 7.6% into the drop while funding held at the full rate. New longs are buying a failed breakout.
  • HYPE held its 76 floor again and its negative funding is gone. That leaves less fuel for a squeeze, and the lower-high pattern still stands.
  • Key risk: US flash PMIs at 13:45 UTC today, with a Fed meeting next week where markets see a real chance of another hike.

Macro backdrop

The backdrop moved a notch toward risk-off since the last brief. Equity volatility rose to about 19 from 16.7, and a hotter US inflation read pushed the dollar and Treasury yields higher. About $431M of crypto positions were liquidated in 24 hours, roughly 60% of them longs (TradingKey).

The deeper supports haven't changed. Net dollar liquidity is still up about $15B over 30 days, the S&P trend holds, credit spreads are very tight and only one of three recession warnings is on. BTC's on-chain valuation sits high in its historical range and timing reads stay mildly negative. Overall the backdrop is neutral with a hawkish tilt. The Fed raised rates in September, and the 27-28 October meeting is being priced as live for another move (Cryptoticker). A strong PMI today would feed that.

BTC - Breakout fully reversed, ETF bid flipped to outflow, 79,700 is the floor

BTC is down 1.2% since the last brief. Thursday ran from 84,047 to a low of 80,911 and closed at 81,410. That close sits under the 20-day near 83,050 and just under the 50-day near 81,800, which price is now testing from below.

The main change is in flows. Spot ETFs lost $635M on Thursday: IBIT -$254M, FBTC -$217M, ARKB -$109M. It was October's largest outflow day and a swing of more than $1.1B from Wednesday (KuCoin, Crypto Briefing). Over the same day, Hyperliquid open interest rose from $3.33B to $3.58B. Funding paid the full 10.95% annualized in all 24 hours. Leverage was added to a falling price, and those positions are paying to stay long.

Neutral, with risk elevated. The range runs from 79,700 to 84,850, and BTC is in the lower half with a crowded long book. A daily close under 79,700, the 15 October low, invalidates the range and opens 76,000 to 77,000. A daily close back above 83,050 would repair the damage.

ETH - Under both averages, ETF outflows back, 2,314 the line

ETH is down 1.4% to 2,403.4 since the last brief, after a low of 2,359. The rejection at the 20-day held. Price is now about 4% under the 20-day near 2,508 and 6% under the 50-day near 2,552.

ETH ETFs went back to outflows: $110M on Thursday, $75.5M of it from ETHA (KuCoin). Wednesday's small inflow was a pause, not a turn. Open interest fell 2.5% to $2.62B and funding averaged about 9.4% annualized, so some longs left but most are still in. Neutral, leaning soft. A daily close under 2,314, the 30-day low, invalidates and opens the 2,200s. A daily close above 2,508 neutralises the lean.

SOL - Post-upgrade drift, 103 to 110 box holds

SOL is down 0.5% to 104.44 since the last brief. It dipped to 102.98 in the selloff and recovered. The 20-day and 50-day have converged near 109.7, which makes that one clean ceiling. Open interest slipped 2% to $571M. The brief negative funding from yesterday is gone, and the rate is back at the full 10.95%.

Alpenglow is live and the network is running. That is a lasting improvement, but the tape is following BTC for now (Crypto Briefing). Neutral. A daily close above 110.5 turns the trend. A daily close under 100 invalidates.

HYPE - 76 floor held again, shorts covered, lower highs intact

HYPE dipped to 76.49 on Thursday and held above the 76.02 low. It marks 78.06, down 0.5% since the last brief, and was the steadiest major through the selloff. Overhead, the 20-day near 83.7 and the 50-day near 85.65 cap the lower-high pattern from the 98 peak.

Positioning reset. The deeply negative funding has flipped back to positive in every one of the last 24 hours, about 10.7% annualized on average, and open interest edged up 1.2% to $1.62B. The squeeze risk flagged yesterday faded without a squeeze. The fundamentals are still solid: about $170B of monthly volume and most fees going to buybacks (Crypto Briefing). That explains the floor, but it hasn't broken the downtrend. The short lean holds. A daily close under 76 opens the low 70s. A daily close above 86.0, where both averages meet, invalidates.

What to watch in the next 72 hours

  • Fri 23 Oct, 13:45 UTC: US and euro area flash PMIs.
  • Fri 23 Oct, after the US close: Friday's ETF flow tally, to see whether Thursday's outflow was a one-off.
  • Weekend: thin liquidity on top of a crowded BTC long book.
  • Daily: BTC 79,700 floor and the 81,800 average, ETH 2,314, HYPE 76.
  • Fed blackout continues into the 27-28 October meeting.
